Meeting Information

Tuesdays · 6:30 – 8:00 pm · 1405 Diamond St.

At Pacific Beach Toastmasters, our goal is to increase your public speaking and leadership skills as quickly and thoroughly as possible through a step by step process outlined in the Toastmaster’s manual. You will not be simply giving a speech. Instead, each speech will focus on a different aspect of how to improve. The 10 speeches you’ll give from your manual are:

  1. Ice breaker: begin speaking before an audience and introduce yourself to your fellow club members.
  2. Organize your speech: organize your thoughts into a logical sequence that leads the audience to a clearly defined goal and select an appropriate outline that allows listeners to understand your speech.
  3. Get to the point: select a topic and determine its general and specific purposes and organize the speech in a manner that best achieves those purposes.
  4. How to say it: select the right words and sentence structure to communicate your ideas clearly, accurately and vividly, and to eliminate unnecessary jargon.
  5. Your body speaks: learn the value of gestures and body movements as part of speech.
  6. Vocal variety: use voice volume, pitch, rate and quality to reflect and add meaning to your message.
  7. Research your topic: collect information about your topic from numerous sources and support your points and opinions with specific facts, examples and illustrations gathered through research.
  8. Get comfortable with visual aids: select visual aids that are appropriate for your message and the audience.
  9. Persuade with power: present a talk that persuades the audience to accept your proposal and viewpoint by appealing to the audience’s self-interest, building a logical foundation for agreement, and arousing emotional commitment to your cause.
  10. Inspire your audience: understand the mood and feelings of your audience on a particular occasion and put those feelings into words and inspire the audience

We’re also aware that we live in a city with tons of activities, great weather, and many choices for Toastmasters clubs. We want to be mindful of your time when you come to our club, that’s why each meeting consists of prepared speeches, functionary roles, and table topics. When you join PBTM, you’ll be able to contribute and grow with the club by doing more than just give speeches. At each meeting there are various roles open to members that help to facilitate growth in leadership, time management, word usage, and evaluations. Our goal is to allow every member a chance to speak during a meeting and to keep the meeting running efficiently so we can start and end on time.
